(WGEM) — Nationwide shortages of popular drugs used to treat attention deficit disorders are sending parents scrambling.
Some are combing through multiple pharmacies for the Adderall and Ritalin that keep their kids calm.
Nearly 5.4 million children in the U-S are being treated for ADD or ADHD.
The recent shortage on Adderall and Ritalin has made it nearly impossible to find the drugs, and the shortage is impacting Quincy as well.
Local pharmacists say they have noticed the shortage and have been making due with what they have.
“The only thing we are really out of stock on is the generic Ritalin, in 5 and 20 milligrams. So if patients need that we can usually switch them to an alternate brand or a drug in the same class,” Bob Pribble, Hy-Vee Pharmacist, said.
If the drug in need isn’t in stock, another similar drug is often substituted, and a new prescription is written.
“At least at this point we’ve always had something that we can switch them to. We just call the physician, he’ll write a new prescription, because they all do require written new prescriptions each time,” Pribble said.
Officials say some distributors of the drugs are citing manufacturing delays and increased demand as part of the reason for the shortages.
